zweisam

'zweisam' is a project of my fourth semester in university based on the novel 'Der Schwarze Obelisk' by Erich Maria Remarque. It takes place in Osnabrück(Germany) where we found this forgotten place. In order to let people remember this place we transform this place by our project into something magical.

When we found the place, we got to know that there was this novel written about it which tells a story about a loving couple. The tragedy is that the beloved woman has schizophrenic tendencies. That's the reason why the protagonist thinks a lot about essential questions. In further consequence we would like to give the user an understanding of schizophrenic disorder. So we build a chair and a retainer for the elbows to get your body in a thinking pose. When the user starts thinking he will get surrounded by quotations of the novel. At the same time a surface transducer starts to vibrate in the retainer and sends a second sound straight to the ear - which should be covered by the hand. The user will be impacted by two different speakers and hereby gets a schizophrenic feeling.
